Characteristic of a Novice Teacher #7- We believe that the novice teacher should effectively integrate content and pedagogy.
During my tutor year in the Benedum Collaborative program, I took a class titled Geometry for Modern Teachers. It was a course that not only taught us Geometry, but how to effectively teach the subject. While in the course, I wrote a paper outlining the Pythagorean Theorem. I was able to prove the theorem in 68 steps. Also, I outlined the West Virginia Content Standards that applied to this project. I also included different ways that I could integrate the knowledge I was taking from this project into my own classroom. This was a project that I worked extremely hard on and am very proud of my work. I would like to include this as an artifact because I believe that it displays my ability to effectively integrate content and pedagogy (characteristic 7). The combination of content knowledge and pedagogy allows educators to know how and what to teach in a particular context. This artifact shows my knowledge of mathematics through my ability to write a proof for a well-known theorem. It also displays my knowledge of pedagogy and how I plan to teach Geometry to my own classes.

I believe this is a great artifact because having a middle-school background, I know about the complexity of proving the Pythagorean Theorm. This artifact (all 68 steps) greatly shows that you can effectively integrate content and pedagogy since not only can you prove it, but you can explain it as well. I think this is going to be extremely effective rather than just giving the formua to your students without any background information.
ReplyDeleteBy outlining 68 steps for the Pythagorean Theorem, you demonstrate great masterly of content thus making your artifact align with characteristic #6. Being fluent in your content area has a great impact in class. Students easily learn from teachers who are not only comfortable, but also willing to show them new ways of mastering a subject.
