Characteristic of the Novice Teacher #9- We believe that the novice teacher should be aware of and have respect for human diversity.

The artifact that I feel displays this characteristic is a lesson plan for a lesson that I taught regarding famous mathematicians. I wanted the students to not only learn about different mathematicians and there contributions to that the math the they learn today, but I wanted them to examine their personal life. How did the mathematicians grow up? Where did they live? What kind of family were they from? What obstacles did the mathematicians face? I wanted to put an emphasis on the obstacles that the mathematicians faced and how they worked through them to become successful.
I believe that this lesson is an example of teaching the students about a number of extremely diverse people in our history. They were able to examine individual, societal, and historical factors that contributed to the mathematicians life. The lesson went extremely well and I feel students had a lot of fun with it.
