Characteristic 6 - "We believe that the novice teacher should have in-depth knowledge of content."
One of the many things that I've struggled with while being a pre-service mathematics teacher is the large range of content that I have to teach. One period I could be teaching my students geometry or pre-algebra and the next period could be a class of calculus students. That is why I decided to create a portfolio the compiled all of my exams from each math class that I have taken. I feel that this artifact shows that I have in-depth knowledge of content. I have taken many different types of mathematics class while at West Virginia University and have saved work from each one. This also helps me to see what additional content knowledge I need to master before becoming an effective educator.

Stephanie, I agree that in our content areas the scope is wide. Masterly of content will make teaching and transitions from one lesson to another easier. Your artifact is ideal, in that you are not only demonstrating this wide scope, but you are also reflecting on the artifact to tease out areas where you need improvement. In effect, what you are doing is creating a tool that demonstrates your repertoire of knowledge in your content area.
ReplyDeleteExcellent artifact.
On the CNT# title you have written 7 instead of 6, please make this correction.
I think these exams would make a great artifact for your portfolio. There are all different kinds of math one could be required to teach, but by including a variety of these exams it shows that you are well-rounded and can handle it.
