Artifacts and Characteristics of the Novice Teacher #9

Characteristic of the Novice Teacher #9- We believe that the novice teacher should be aware of and have respect for human diversity.

The artifact that I feel displays this characteristic is a lesson plan for a lesson that I taught regarding famous mathematicians. I wanted the students to not only learn about different mathematicians and there contributions to that the math the they learn today, but I wanted them to examine their personal life. How did the mathematicians grow up? Where did they live? What kind of family were they from? What obstacles did the mathematicians face? I wanted to put an emphasis on the obstacles that the mathematicians faced and how they worked through them to become successful.
I believe that this lesson is an example of teaching the students about a number of extremely diverse people in our history. They were able to examine individual, societal, and historical factors that contributed to the mathematicians life. The lesson went extremely well and I feel students had a lot of fun with it.

  1. Stephanie, this sounds like an interesting topic. The questions that ringed in my head while reading your blog are, which mathematicians did you discuss? What connections did the students make with these mathematicians? How diverse was this group?
Diversity is abundant in our societies today and it can be in the form of SES, region, religion, race/ethnicity, culture, history, et cetera. I can only imagine that the mathematicians discussed came from different parts of the world and had normal lifes which students can connect with. This meets the requirement for CNT #9

  2. Sounds like a great lesson! Sometimes I feel as if teachers get so caught up with the actual work they forget the background information behind it. Lots of students liek knowing the stories behind the concepts. I'm sure Dr. Martin would be proud!
